On location – your photo shoot

Congratulations, you’re married! If everything went to plan, you’ve just finished exchanging your rings and vows, and the ink has almost dried on your newly-signed wedding certificates.

Typically, you have some time to relax before the real party begins, but since it’s your wedding day and every minute counts, you’ll probably want to use this time to get some brilliant photos – and video – of yourselves, your families and your bridal party.

It’s time to go on location, and share some super sharp tips on how to make your bridal shoot look Hollywood-good.

If you’re dreading this part of the day – don’t! You’ll be surprised how many people don’t enjoy being posed at their wedding, so here’s my number one tip for your location shoot – you don’t have to pose.

When it comes to filming you at your natural best, natural is the look we go for. That means we don’t pose you or pretend you’re on an exotic movie set. Since you’re married and very much in love the chemistry is already there. Whatever location you’ve chosen – be it rolling farmlands, wide open beaches, or urban streets – the focus is very much on you.

So relax, enjoy this ‘downtime’ between the seriousness of the ceremony and the craziness of the party, and just be yourself. Walking hand-in-hand along a forest path as the camera glides around you is far more appealing than standing stiff and putting on a face. You bring the love, we’ll make the art.

Here’s another tip – since the story is all about you – try not to cram too much into your location shoot. Keep your shoot to one or two locations, as close to the ceremony or reception venue as possible. The longer you spend getting to your location the less time you have to spend together, and the more time your guests will have to wait for you to arrive.

We’ll help you plan ahead to make sure the location shoot timing works for you, for us, and for your photographer. In most cases the location is chosen by you and the photographer, and we join you to capture the fun and natural moments you spend together during your photo shoot. That said, we do ask that you spare some time in-between the photos to allow us to film sequences of the two of you moving, talking and smiling.

Also, to maximise your time, try get the family and bridal party photos done first, and then ditch the fam to have the time you need just for you. Ideally you’ll want at least half an hour of ‘just you time’, but we’ll make the most of the time you have.

Finally, always plan the location shoot around the time of year you’re getting married, paying close attention to sunset times and weather conditions. A wet-weather plan is a must, and make sure you have enough light for the cameras. While we don’t mind shooting in the dark, your location – and you – will look best in the golden hours just before sunset.

Consider the location shoot – or bridal shoot as it’s commonly called – the private time for you to reflect on your day. It can be fun and frivolous, or quiet and intimate, but ultimately it’s all about the two people whose story we’re telling today.
