3D Wedding Video

3D Wedding Video

Last weekend we took along the new Panasonic 3D video camera to our weddings to test it out. I’m happy to say that the results are pretty amazing !

If you haven’t yet seen 3D video, the best way to describe the experience is that it’s like you are watching the event happen through a window.  It brings an amazing level of ‘reality’ to the video.

We are now editing the footage and will soon have a 3D demo to show to new clients.  If you’re an existing client and would like to talk to us about adding 3D, please give me a call!

Panasonic AG3DA1

Thanks to both Karan & Ivan and Fiona & Danny for allowing us to bring the 3D camera along.  It was awesome shooting alongside the team from Saxon Cole Photography on both weddings.  Thanks to Wil for coming along on Sunday to shoot some behind the scenes footage (which should be very entertaining when it’s finished!).

The technical stuff:

The images that this camera produces are surprisingly good.  Surprising because my initial reaction to the camera was that it’s not worth it’s $25,000 price tag.

Having used the Sony EX1 as our main video cameras for a few years, I have to say that the Panasonic is very light-on for features.  There’s no ND filters, there’s limited audio control, no peaking, no expanded focus … from a Sony-user’s perspective it seems that they have left a lot out.

The trade-off however is that it is quite easy to use – and an added bonus is that it’s extremely light at a measly 2.4kg.  The low-light performance seems to be terrible … however, an anomaly of 3D is that the grain that you would normally see in 2D seems to disappear when you make a 3D image.  So even at +24db the 3D image looks clean!  Great for shooting the dimly-lit bridal watlz!

I still think that the camera is massively overpriced, but the price may drop as others (Sony, Canon etc) enter the 3D arena.

Thanks to Guy Lerner for taking these photos of us shooting.   You’ll see in the photo below, Alex shooting on the Canon 5D, me (Dave) shooting on the Panasonic 3D camera and Ian shooting on … um, what exactly are you shooting on there Ian?

  • That’s awesome Dave. Congrats on leading the 3D event film-making movement in Sydney! Good to see Ian having a go at cinematography with that director’s scope 😉

    All the best from Brissy.

  • Thanks for the review Dave. It still feels that 3D wedding is still afar, and thank god for that as we are barely scratching the surface of DSLR shooting.
$25K is vastly overpriced, and for sure it will go down on price real fast

We took the camera out for a test on the same weekend in Perth. I think I would much prefer to have a proper 3D rig than this toy camera but of course they would be totally impractical for a wedding.
