Getting ready on your wedding day

Most couples consider their wedding ceremony and reception as the highlight moments of their wedding film, but a great wedding story starts way before all that good stuff happens.

Getting yourself ready for the big day is every bit as important as what follows: full of nervous energy, fun pranks, colourful traditions and, sometimes, serious reflection.

So let us share some tips that’ll make your preps as enjoyable for you as they are for us, along with hints that’ll make this part of your film as exceptional as the rest.

For starters, think carefully about where you’d like us to film you getting ready. If you pick a dark room in the corner of your house, it’ll look like you’re getting ready in a dark room in the corner of your house! Remember, you’re putting your best foot forward, so don’t be shy to dress up a big, bright section of your home – or hotel room – just for this occasion. Imagine you’re setting up the room for a very special guest, or an interview with Cosmo. The better it looks, the better you’ll look in it.

Also, most people look their best in natural light, so brides, find a well-lit room – ideally close to a window – and make it your make-up and hair HQ. A good hairdresser and make-up artist will likely look for a beautiful, well-lit setting to style you in, but if they don’t, do it for them.

Boys, the same goes for you. We’re not talking flowers and candles – unless that’s your thing – but neat, tidy and super presentable is the way to go. Whether it’s a games room, man-cave or just your mum’s lounge, keep it clean and the focus will be on you, not last night’s party.

You’ll probably want to show off the clothes, shoes and accessories that make this the biggest day of your lives – the dress, the tux, the Jimmy Choos. We’ll be ready to make them look as fabulous as they are, but give us a head start by setting them aside the day before so nothing’s missed, and styling them like you want them to be seen. Dresses always look better hung rather than draped over a bed, and wooden hangers say ‘style’ much better than plastic. Guys, we’ll place the shoes for you but make sure they’re polished, and no dry cleaning tags on that Armani suit please!

Another small hint – try keep mirrors to a minimum in your main change room. We love your reflection as much as you do, but not so much our own reflections in your wedding film.

Last but not least, we want you to have fun. If you’re happy and relaxed, you’ll appear happy and relaxed. That means making sure all the people that need to be at your preps are there on time, and that you have everything you need for the day.

Brides, if you’re getting ready in your family home, have your loved ones with you, and keep a few sentimental keepsakes with you so they’re part of the film. If not, bring them with you! And keep a bottle of bubbly handy so you can share a special toast with your ladies.

Boys, please be showered, shaved and ready to go by the time your film crew arrives. That quick dash to the corner store to get more wine – it can wait. It’s always cool to add a bit of spice to this part of your film – so speak to us about shooting your preps on a golf course or during a Nerf gun fight and add a bit of crazy to start the day.

As you can see, there’s a lot more to getting ready for your wedding than just getting ready. A little bit of planning goes a long way to making this part of your day as special and memorable as any other, and a great start to the many wonderful stories that follow.
